Are You Ready To Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway?

In her book “ Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway” Susan Jeffers states that “ if everybody feels fear when approaching something totally new in life, yet so many are out there “doing” it despite the fear, then we must conclude that fear is not the problem”.

So if fear is not the problem, what is?

For me recently it was the thought of doing 17 videos for our new on-line learning programme Beginning2Winning.

The fear stemmed from the fact that I don’t like looking at myself. I don’t even like getting photos done!

And this had been holding me back.

What are you avoiding doing? What are you resisting?

I know that change has been a constant factor in business in the last ten years because if what you’re doing isn’t working then you must do something you haven’t done before if you want to get different results.

How do you feel about implementing changes?

Are you excited and fired up by the prospect or do you feel a certain resistance?

And how does this exhibit itself?

And if you are feeling resistant and maybe a bit fearful how are you going to help your staff through the change in such a way that it is win-win for all concerned?

Some of the reasons given for resistance to change are fear of the unknown, fear of success or fear of failure.

When change is imposed by others it is more difficult to deal with because people are happy in their comfort zones and doing something different will change the status quo.

Some people react well to change and others exhibit a range of behaviours that can be aggressive and disruptive depending on whether they see change as an opportunity or as a threat.

If you think of the responses you get as feedback then you can focus on how you can use this information to move your staff forward.  Assume that resistant people do want to change, they just don’t know how to do it yet.

Managing change is about managing resistance and one of the most powerful ways to achieve this is through Peak Performance Coaching.

So how about “Feeling the Fear and Doing It Anyway”?

You can start by thinking of three things that you have been resisting or avoiding doing and then for each one answer the following  questions:

  • What specifically is it that you feel uncomfortable about ?
  • What stops you doing it?
  • What happens when you imagine getting it done perfectly, with no problem whatsoever?
  • When are you going to do it?
  • How are you going to reward yourself when you do?

…..because when you feel the fear and do it anyway your comfort zone is stretched and you know what is brilliant about that? It never goes back!
